Goat Lake
(The Glacier Peak Area)
Note: This trail review has pending updates.
Dave Frazee
This trail is once again spectacular! Many years ago the trail to Goat Lake followed along the banks of Elliot Creek, but this scenic trail was abandoned in favor of an old logging road when the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness was designated. The logging road follows through alder-dominated cut-over forest and provides the hiker with a disappointing journey to a beautiful destination. But in 1999 the Forest Service opened up the old trail along Elliot Creek. A contractor hired using Trail Park Pass money has built bridges, turnpikes and new tread through once swampy areas. The new trailhead is in the parking lot about 100 feet south of the logging road trailhead. It descends quickly to meet Elliot Creek and follows along the eastern bank of this rumbling blue line on the map. Elliot Creek is full of surprises with many huge boulders and log jams forming gentle pools and thundering drops. At time the trail comes dangerously close the creek, but never crosses it. The forest here is beautiful and unspoiled until the trail begins to climb back up toward the old logging road. Here meet stands of alder - the result of old clear-cuts. The trail re-enters old-growth forest at the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness boundary. Here the trail is flanked by two huge western red cedars. The trail from here on is the remnant of an old wagon road and at times is very wide, but always rocky and root-filled as it climbs switchbacks toward the lake. Just before reaching the lake, stop for Elliot Creek's last great surprise, McIntosh falls. The falls just below the lake outlet slide over huge rock slabs. A small side trail takes you to a good view point. There are designated campsites at the lake - follow the signs. Camping is prohibited within 200 feet of the lake and fires are not allowed within 1/4 of a mile from the lake.
