Mountain Aix
(The South Cascades)

Dick Axon
The trail starts out by gaining altitude quickly through cool forest. Opportunities to fill your water bottle on this trail may be rare in late season so bring plenty of water or fill up at the first stream. There is also a nice spring near a campsite at 3.5 miles -- about 6200'. This is a great campsite offering a tremendous view of Mount Rainier. Soon after leave the forest and the switchbacks behind for a long traverse to a 7100' saddle along Nelson ridge. Find a junction of two trail, one leading along the ridge and the other signed as the Mount Aix trail. You can see Mount Aix looming before you. Follow the connecting ridge and be prepared for a little scrambling on loose rock to reach the summit. Here you will find the usual remnants of a long-gone fire lookout. Take in views of Rainier, Adams, St. Helens and the surrounding William O. Douglas Wilderness all around. On hot days look down into the cool meadows cut through by streams feeding Hindoo Creek and wish you were down there. On your way back take some time to wander Nelson Ridge and marvel at the many tiny wildflowers pushing up through piles of broken rock everywhere you look, but tread lightly on the delicate vegatation.
