Sulphur Creek
(The Glacier Peak Area)
This area supposedly has some sulphur hot springs, but they are
not easy to find. The trail starts on the north side of FR
#26, opposite Sulphur Creek C.G. During the main season, if
you park inside the campground, you may be charged a day
use/picnic fee. There is no parking lot along the road. The
trail starts at a shiny, new trail sign on the north side of
the road opposite the campground and gains a few hundred feet
to the Wilderness boundary at 0.5 miles. From here it drops and
reaches the creek at mp 0.8 near the site of the hot springs which
are on the opposite side of the stream. Frequently you can smell the
rotten egg odor of the hot springs, but they can be hard to find. As of
June 1999, there were no trustworthy foot logs to cross the river and
further explore the hot springs. During the spring melt runoff, it is not
safe to wade the creek here. Just after passing the Wilderness boundary
sign, you may be able to catch a short glimpse of Glacier Peak (complete
with Scimitar Towers) through the trees. The unmaintained trail
continues, but is blocked by many large fallen trees and crosses several
washouts until it eventually peters out at approximately mp 2. One
section of the trail offers a nice view of cascades in the creek where it
forms an island. Our rating of "More difficult" is based upon the
upper, unmaintained segment of the trail.
